After loading into a game, and no matter the mode you choose, you will be met with a series of quests that act as the tutorial with the second to last quest being to kill the Commander. He will be found on the overworld in an area covered in flesh, this is called 'The Corruption of It' and will spread until Vile is dealt with.
The steps in order:
- Pick up 2 sticks and craft a wand.
- Gather some food and eat it.
- Rest to regain your energy.
- Craft a simple pickaxe and axe.
- Use the level-up menu (Orange Box in the upper right-hand corner of the screen) to allocate an attribute point.
| Depending on your character class, you have either Grit or Intelligence.
Attack Power - One point of Attack Power grants 4% increased damage Vitality - one point of Vitality grants 45 to maximum hit points Dexterity - One point of Dexterity grants you 5 Armor and 2% increased damage Intelligence - One point of Intelligence grants 1 mana (=additional wand charge) and 2% increased damage Vigor - one point of Vigor grants 2% to all resistances Note: Resistances only affects how likely you are to get DOTed. It is NOT a damage reduction. (DOT = damage over time, e.g. being on fire, being frozen etc.) |
- Place the learning potion you received into your hotbar and use it by pressing the appropriate hotkey.
- Active your Ancient Item.
- Craft and place a campfire
- Cook any food recipe
- Collect 20 cobblestone and 2 iron ore to craft the forge and workbench.
- Craft and place a planter box and plant a seed in it.
- Use your Survival skill points in the Survival panel (level up your farming skill for fast XP early on).
- Craft some improved armor and and an improved weapon.
Now onto Vile himself, he is very difficult to outrun, but you can prepare a column to block him, and make a hole to safely shoot through. This strategy works with sword and shield and dual daggers as well. If you are struggling you may have found a 'Scroll of Blessing' which may also help mitigate the danger. Killing Commander Vile also stops The Corruption of It from spreading and monsters from spawning on the surface.
- Place the Homestone, walk away, and recall. After teleporting, recall again while standing near the stone to teleport back.
| Tip: Before a difficult encounter (for example a boss fight), it's a good idea to recall once first to set your teleport location to that place. This way, if you die, you can quickly return there, saving a lot of time. |
